Project Management Office (PMO)

What is PMO?

PMO maintains the standards for project management in an organization.  They define the processes, standards, provide governance and enforce accountability for managing a project.  PMO will create templates for documentation to be followed by all departments.  The PMO will support the company’s culture and business needs.  They define the Project Management principles and guidelines.  They will support the project planning, dashboard reporting, risk management, resource management and budgeting activities. 

They create Project Schedules, identify risks, update the risk log, create weekly reports and communicate with all the stakeholders.

Three components are important in making PMO office highly efficient

  1. Functional
  2. Structural
  3. Disciplinary

These three are different facets of the PMO.  All three are inter-dependent.  The efficiency of the PMO depends on their effective functioning

1. Functional

The PMO sets up the Standards.  It controls the projects by a Governance body.  It manages projects to deliver in time. PMO strategizes in creating and managing projects in alignment with the business priorities.

2. Structural

The leaders and contributing personnel are PMO’s people.

PMO defines processes to be followed for the achievement of projects

The tools are used by the PMO to accomplish the organization’s goals efficiently

3. Disciplinary

The following disciplines are important when setting up PMO office.
